Shipping your vehicle from Australia: all you need to know

After enjoying the freedom of having your own vehicle in the desolate roads of the Australian outback, the busy east coast, or the wild west coast you will sooner or later have to ship your motorbike/car/truck back home (like me) or even better keep travelling somewhere else around the world (good for you).

I have to admit that the procedure in my case was made easier by the shipping company Tradelanes who helped me a lot to solve all the small bureaucratic annoyances involved in the process. After the pain of shipping from East Timor to Darwin I found dealing with the professionality of Stewart of Tradelanes almost too easy.

I shipped from Melbourne (destination Vancouver) but Tradelanes can organize the shipment from main ports all over Australia; Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Fremantle to practically every corner of the world facing the sea.

All of the process can be organized a week in advance, on the bottom of the post you will find all the information in order to contact the shipping company Tradelanes.

A few reccomendations before shipping from Australia:

  •  The vehicle has to be as clean as possible (it doesn’t matter the final destination you are shipping to).
  • If you ship roll on roll off there are some restrictions about what you can have with your vehicle. No particular restrictions if you are shipping with a container.

Time shipping from Australia

Here are some examples about the time for shipping from Australia to some ports around the world. As you can easily imagine the times are pretty flexible due to many variables.

Melbourne – Auckland (New Zealand) 4 days
Melbourne – Los Angeles (United States) 22 days
Melbourne – Vancouver (Canada) 26 days
Melbourne – La Spezia/Venice (Italy) 42 days
Most of the Australian ports – Chile/Argentina 52 days (via Singapore or Busan)

What size of vehicle?

The sizes of the containers available are the following:
20’ = 5900 x 2300 x 2300
40’ = 11900 x 2300 x 2300
40’ High Cube = 11900 x 2600 x 2300

The roll on roll off is an option that you can consider in case you are driving a massive truck that does not fit in a container.

Price of shipping from Australia

The price of the shipment varies according to the size of the vehicle. If you are going to ship your motorbike the price will be based on the size of the crate.

Just as an example shipping a car roll on roll off going from Melbourne – Auckland will cost you 1250 AUD.
Don’t forget that most of the time you will have to pay additional fees in the port of destination. In some countries like Canada for example you have to pay for the Soil Exam (45CAD). Other fees that may greet you could be “Dock Charge”, “Terminal Rehandle”, “Handling” and potentially some other mysterious technical words.
